John Wallace & The Notions - Figuring Out Review
NMR - Nice smooth groove from these guys, laid back rhythm with a meandering chord structure, the vocals feel like the main character for me, nice tone, good BV and harmonies, it all blends nciely and works well.
The guitar work fills the gaps with chord stabs , the mix creates width and dynamics, overall a pretty cool track.
After more than a decade behind the drums, John Wallace steps out from the kit and into a new creative chapter with John Wallace & The Notions, marking the shift with their debut single, ‘Figuring Out’.
The track captures a moment of transition, shaped by both uncertainty and forward momentum. Rooted in indie rock and Americana, ‘Figuring Out’ evolves from a warm, intimate opening into a more expansive, driving sound. Smooth rhythms, layered instrumentation, and spacious arrangements give the song a sense of movement and emotional depth.
The band features a strong lineup, with guitarist Cian Doolan, bassist Dan Pearson, pianist Peter Flynn, and drummer Graeme Stapleton joining singer-songwriter John Wallace to bring the project to life.
Building on their growing reputation as a compelling live act, the band has already made an impression on home soil, including a full set of original material at the 2025 Kilkenny Roots Festival. With two more singles planned for release this year, momentum is clearly building.
Speaking about the track, Wallace explains:
“‘Figuring Out’ is about trying to make sense of where you’re at in life, and learning to be okay with not having all the answers.”
Now performing under the name Case Zero, the band continues to refine their identity through new material and a growing list of live shows. Their debut album, Wrong Place Wrong Time, is set for release in April 2026, marking a significant milestone in their journey so far.
